The sit-in demonstration by Thma U Rangli-Juki (TUR) leader Angela Rangad outside the gate of the Secretariat, which is now into its second week, is nonsensical as the government is making effort to process the very payments that she is pushing for.
This was said today by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, who also termed the sit-in as unacceptable.
“A sit-in demonstration in front of the Secretariat will not be allowed for security reasons and if the concerned person has anything to ask and discuss, she can come and meet us, but sitting out there cannot go on,” he stated.
As he understood it, Rangad has been protesting against delays in the payment of monetary aid meant for vulnerable workers during the first phase of the Covid-19 pandemic last year.
“There was a list of more than 2.20 lakh people that had come to us and once the NIC and the Labour Department went through the details, they found out that there were duplicate names of almost 40,000. Therefore, the number came down to 1.84 lakh and, out of this 1.50 lakh have received the benefits and the rest of the money is in the bank where verification of details is still pending but the process is ongoing,” the CM stated.
Meanwhile, Raijor Dal, a political party in Assam, expressed its solidarity with Rangad’s struggle today.
