Greater Shillong is likely to be more than usually quiet on Saturday, with all shops ordered to remain shut.
No reason was given by the Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills, though the timing does coincide with the planned arrival of Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Shillong. Saturday is also the day that a protest against Covid restrictions is scheduled to take place.
Wine shops, bonded warehouses, canteens and those offering home delivery of liquor; wholesale open markets in Cantonment, Mawlong Hat and Paltan Bazaar; the farmers’ market at Anjalee Parking Lot; and those shops under Pasteur Beat House (Zone 3), Lumdiengjri area (Zone 4) and Mawlai (Zone 5) will remain shut.
All those wine shops that were originally permitted to open on Saturday were allowed to operate on Friday. Shops in the above-mentioned localities that were scheduled to open on Saturday were also given permission to function on Friday.
