A mob vandalised the Nongmensong Police Outpost yesterday night after two drunks were picked up for causing a commotion in the neighbourhood.
According to East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police, Sylvester Nongtnger, two men were found in the area in an inebriated condition and were taken to the outpost for medical examination. This followed allegations of an assault at around 11pm.
Strangely enough, one of the two picked up was an orderly of the Director General of Police. The other was a civilian.
Later, a crowd gathered at the Nongmensong outpost and started assaulting one of the two persons who were picked up and abused the police personnel and those of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) on duty.
The mob also pelted stones, thereby damaging two police vehicles, three private vehicles and three two-wheelers. Nongtnger informed that three CRPF personnel sustained injuries.
“In this regard, it is advised to the general public not to spread false rumours about the incident,” the SP said today.
Cases have been filed at Rynjah Police Station regarding the ruckus.
“Investigation is on to ascertain more facts into the case and enquiry is on to ascertain the veracity of the allegation of assault, which sparked the issue,” Nongtnger said.
A community liaison group meeting was held at Nongmensong outpost between the various community stakeholders where they have undertaken to all work towards peace and harmony in the area.
Meanwhile, Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui emphasised that police should act swiftly in these types of incidents since there are rumour mongers who will try to spread false narratives.
“Police should take swift action and, more importantly, disseminate information swiftly so that rumour mongers cannot spread false news,” he said.
