Opposition Congress legislator and Chairperson of the Assembly Committee for Empowerment of Women, Ampareen Lyngdoh has urged Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh to remove, Thomas Sangma as member of the House Committees.
It may be mentioned that Sangma has been accused of rape by a woman.
“Our criminal justice system has historically been tilted against women, and it is for this sole reason rape victims must be entitled to a benefit of doubt, when she raises an allegation of sexual assault,” Lyngdoh in the letter to the Speaker said.
She has asked the Speaker, to remove Sangma from as Chairman of Assembly Committee on Estimates and as member of the Committee on Public Accounts until the police investigation and trial (if any) are complete.
