A group active on social media calling itself ‘Keinnoh Ynnai Long Mraw’ has strongly condemned the alleged summoning of some social activists by police on the recent call for a public protest on June 1 against the Covid lockdown and vaccination drive.
In an unsigned statement issued today, the group said the police summon of the social activists was uncalled for “since the activists were not at all involved in any manner with the planned protest”.
“The WhatsApp group was not created by any organisation. It is a platform of the people to voice issues related to the people,” the statement said.
It also said that the WhatsApp group was created by the people under the constitutional provision of freedom of speech and expression.
“The fundamental rights under Articles 14 to 35 of the Constitution are rights that cannot be abolished. Therefore, we appeal to the police and the State government not to intimidate anyone especially in this difficult period for people living from hand to mouth,” the group said.
It also asked the government to “think properly” before making any decision and not force people to go for Covid tests and vaccination.
The authors of the missive said that the proposed public gathering on June 1 and march is to show the democratic rights of the people.
“We are not forcing anyone to join this demonstration. People are free to decide whether to take part or not,” the release said.
