Unwelcome and unwanted Covid-19 records continued to be set in Meghalaya today, with 21 coronavirus-related deaths recorded in the state, taking the total death toll to 301.
There have been 130 Covid deaths in May so far, more than in the last seven months combined. There were also 560 new infections and 215 recoveries from the disease reported today.
Total recoveries crossed the 18,000 mark and recoveries for this month passed 3,000. However, the overall recovery rate dropped below 80 percent as the state has added almost two new infections for every recorded recovery in May (5,917 to 3,041).
Seventeen fatalities were added to East Khasi Hills’ figures today, with two in West Jaintia Hills and two in Ri-Bhoi. Nineteen out of the 21 had Covid-19 pneumonia listed as a cause of death.
The deceased were identified as Lambok Shadap (66) of Rtiang, Mantu Das (64) of Oakland Bivar Road in Shillong, Rilan Dkhar (54) of Jowai, Jariel Lato (87) of Umshyngiar, Wanjop Phawa (42) of Wahiajer Ummulong, Kamal Muchahari (58) of Polo in Shillong, Weltonsing Kharmyndai (38) of Umbir, Mon Kumar Suna (48) of Jingkieng Nongthymmai in Shillong, Deepak Das Choudhury (69) of Rilbong in Shillong, Margradalin Marbaniang (56) of Mawlai Mawkynroh, Ramu Rai (66) of Barapathar in Shillong, Everest Wahlang (47) of Pdengshnong Sohra, Pherson Nongrum (52) of Laitklyngkot, Daiadonlang Allya (51) of Jaiaw Mawbynna in Shillong, Shakespear Bamon (65) of Moopala, Andrius Nongpyiur (54) of Lumparing in Shillong, Stolina Muktieh (56) of Kolweng, Aiplimon Mawroh (73) of Smit Mawiewduh, Kerlang Rymbai (55) of Umsaw, Tiewbili Dhar (57) of Mupliang and Benhail Jerome Shullai (36) of Umpling.
East Khasi Hills accounted for 359 of today’s reported infections – seven among returnees, one among armed forces/paramilitaries, 141 high-risk contacts, 55 influenza-like illnesses (ILIs), 22 through screening, two health workers, 19 severe acute respiratory infections (SARIs), one in Bishnupur, eight in Jaiaw, five in Laban, two in Laitkor, two in Laitumkhrah, four in Lumparing, one in Madanrting, one in Mawbah, three in Mawdiangdiang, 27 in Mawlai, one in Mawpat, eight in Mawprem, 12 at Mt Hermon School, six in Nongmynsong, three in Nongrah, two in Nongrim Hills, two in Nongthymmai, two in Oakland, seven in Khyndailad, three in Polo, two in Pynthor, two in Pynursla, one in Rynjah, one in Shella, one in Smit, one in Umpling and four in Upper Shillong.
West Jaintia Hills reported 72 new cases (44 in Ummulong, 13 ILIs, six screening, four high-risk, two returnees, two health workers, one SARI), West Garo Hills 50 (23 high-risk, 14 screening, six ILIs, three returnees, two health workers, one police personnel, one SARI), Ri-Bhoi 28 (eight ILIs, seven armed forces/paramilitaries, four health workers, two high-risk, two police, two SARIs, two screening, one returnee), West Khasi Hills 20 (12 screening, six high-risk, one ILI, one police), South West Garo Hills 12 (eight in Betasing, two health workers, one high-risk, one screening), East Jaintia Hills eight (all ILIs), North Garo Hills eight (five high-risk, two returnees, one health worker), South West Khasi Hills two (both high-risk) and East Garo Hills one (high-risk).
There were also 215 recoveries today – 144 in East Khasi Hills, 22 in East Garo Hills, 15 in West Khasi Hills, 10 in West Garo Hills, seven in North Garo Hills, six in South West Garo Hills, four in Ri-Bhoi, four in East Jaintia Hills, two in South West Khasi Hills and one in West Jaintia Hills.
There are now 4,338 active Covid-19 cases in the state. East Khasi Hills alone accounts for 2,449 active cases, Ri-Bhoi 590, West Garo Hills 392, West Jaintia Hills 267, East Jaintia Hills 171, South West Garo Hills 160 and West Khasi Hills 143.
In all, Meghalaya has had 22,763 Covid-19 cases, of which 4,338 are active, 18,124 have recovered and 301 have died from the virus. The recovery rate has fallen to 79.62 percent. The fatality rate has increased to 1.32 percent. The seven-day rolling average for new cases now stands at 494.71. More than 3.96 lakh doses of the Covid-19 vaccines have been administered in the state as of today.
