      Records tumble again: Meghalaya reports 591 new Covid-19 cases

      Meghalaya reported 591 new cases of Covid-19 today, the highest single-day tally since the pandemic began last year. There were also another 18 deaths – the joint highest for a single day.

      Sixteen fatalities were added to East Khasi Hills’ figures, with one in East Jaintia Hills and one in West Jaintia Hills. Fifteen out of the 18 had Covid-19 pneumonia listed as a cause of death.

      The deceased were identified as Lumson Nongkhlaw (64) of Nongpoh, Lhakpa Dikki Sherpa (32) of Upper Mawprem in Shillong, Ladaplin Bank (45) of Pynursla, Ambrosina Ksing (68) of Upper Shillong, Repkolin Wanniang (69) of Golf Links in Shillong, Rajendra Singh (63) of Pdengshnong, Sibon Lyndem (78) of Mawkdok, Ral Langstang (63) of Muthlong Rim, Lucia Tngen Wahlang (66) of Nongmynsong in Shillong, Tioris Nongdhar (58) of Mawphlang, Wording Syiemlieh (49) of Umbir (but temporarily resident of Jaiaw in Shillong), Khlainbor Kharbuki (43) of Mawlai Umthlong, Ashok Burman (37) of Upper Mawprem in Shillong, Blansing Marwein (78) of Nongkseh, Phum Lyngdoh (58) of Lawsohtun in Shillong, Bhim Sen Thangkhiew (79) of Umlyngka, Paul L Syiemlieh (87) of Umsning and Shem Dkhar (27) of Rngad.

      There have now been 4,730 new infections this month and 97 deaths, easily making May the worst month for Meghalaya in terms of the pandemic.

      East Khasi Hills accounted for 318 of today’s reported infections – 12 among returnees, two armed forces/paramilitaries, six police personnel, 132 high-risk contacts, 77 influenza-like illnesses (ILIs), 26 through screening, 12 health workers, 27 severe acute respiratory infections (SARIs), one in Golf Links, one in Happy Valley, one in Jail Road, one in Laban, three in Laitkor, three in Laitumkhrah, two in Malki, one in Mawkynrem, two in Mawlai, one in Mawprem, one in Mawsynram, one in Nongrim Hills, two in Nongthymmai, two in Khyndailad, one in Pynthor and one in Umpling.

      Ri-Bhoi reported 93 new cases (37 high-risk, 19 in Umiam, 15 in Rangmen, 13 ILIs, six in Khweng, three screening, one SARI), West Garo Hills 63 (20 high-risk, 15 ILIs, 14 returnees, 13 screening, 1 health worker), West Jaintia Hills 37 (29 ILIs, seven SARIs, one returnee), South West Garo Hills 32 (17 in Betasing, nine high-risk, three ILIs, three screening), East Jaintia Hills 14 (six ILIs, five high-risk, two screening, one SARI), East Garo Hills nine (five high-risk, three ILIs, one returnee), South West Khasi Hills nine (all high-risk), North Garo Hills eight (six police, one ILI, one returnee), West Khasi Hills seven (six high-risk, one police) and South Garo Hills one (screening).

      There were also 314 recoveries – 158 in East Khasi Hills, 47 in West Khasi Hills, 37 in West Garo Hills, 31 in Ri-Bhoi, 20 in West Jaintia Hills, eight in East Jaintia Hills, five in South West Garo Hills, four in South West Khasi Hills, two in South Garo Hills, one in North Garo Hills and one in East Garo Hills.

      There are now 3,726 active Covid-19 cases in the state. East Khasi Hills alone accounts for 2,121 active cases, Ri-Bhoi 502, West Garo Hills 352, East Jaintia Hills 156, West Jaintia Hills 147, South West Garo Hills 137 and West Khasi Hills 124.

      In all, Meghalaya has had 21,576 Covid-19 cases, of which 3,726 are active, 17,582 have recovered and 268 have died from the virus. The recovery rate has fallen to 81.49 percent. The fatality rate has increased to 1.24 percent. More than 3.74 lakh doses of the Covid-19 vaccines have been administered in the state as of today. The seven-day rolling average for new cases now stands at 421.14.
