Nongkseh, in Upper Shillong, has been clamped with a containment order after 39 cases and three fatalities linked to Covid-19 were reported in the area.
The containment order came into effect this evening and will apply until at least May 23.
The Dorbar Shnong implemented strict measures, with the Seng Samla and volunteers keeping a watch on the ingress and egress of people from the locality but there was obviously still a way for the virus to spread within the community.
“We would never want to put our residents, especially the daily wage earners, into this situation but we are left with no other option to contain the spread of this deadly virus here,” the Rangbah Shnong, AL Thangkhiew, said. “What is very concerning is that some households have seen all members testing positive, including children.”
Apart from health workers, no one will be allowed to move in or out of the locality or even visit each other’s homes. The containment period will be used to carry out contact tracing.
When the first 25 cases were detected in Nongkseh, it was decided that random testing should be carried out. During this 8 percent of people tested were found to be positive, secretary of the local Covid management team, S Nongsiej, said.
