      Meghalaya’s Covid death toll blasts past 200 on horror day

      Eleven further Covid-related deaths were recorded in Meghalaya today, a new and terrible record.

      The state’s death toll due to the disease shot up to 210 as a result, with 39 of these fatalities coming in the first eight days of this month, making May the second-worst month on record, only behind September’s 41 deaths.

      All 11 fatalities were added to East Khasi Hills’ figures – three of the deceased were actually from Jowai and one from Ri-Bhoi, but had passed away in Shillong hospitals. They were identified as Skindro Dkhar (51) of Mission Compound in Jowai, Bina Rani Dey (77) of Nongthymmai in Shillong, Nancy Khongjee (80) of Pynursla in East Khasi Hills, Pyrkhat Gympad (60) of Lower Mawprem in Shillong, Amanda Rynjah (38) of Mawlai Mawdatbaki in East Khasi Hills, Banteidorlang Lyngdoh (35) of Pynursla in East Khasi Hills, Bun Paswet (60) of Panaliar in Jowai, Jennar Sutnga (60) of Chutwakhu in Jowai, Tret Mawnai (48) of Nongbsap in East Khasi Hills, Hordwin Myrboh (64) of Mawlynrei in East Khasi Hills, Manoj Kumar Choudhury (61) of Umroi Cantonment in Ri-Bhoi.

      There were also 375 new infections today, including among 19 health workers and 23 returnees.

      East Khasi Hills accounted for 210 of today’s reported infections – 15 among returnees, seven armed forces/paramilitaries, 96 high-risk contacts, 43 influenza-like illnesses (ILIs), 11 through screening, seven health workers, eight severe acute respiratory infections (SARIs), five police personnel, two in the district jail, one in Golf Links, three in Laban, three in Laimer, one in Laitumkhrah, one in Lapalang, four in Madanrting, one in Mawdiangdiang, one one in Mawprem and one in Nongkseh.

      Ri-Bhoi reported 73 new cases (32 high-risk, 14 in Lumsohphoh, nine health workers, eight screening, five ILIs, four returnees, one police), South West Garo Hills 32 (18 in Betasing, 12 screening, two returnees), West Jaintia Hills 18 (nine screening, six high-risk, three police), West Garo Hills 12 (six screening, three high-risk, two health workers, one returnee), West Khasi Hills 12 (seven high-risk, five screening), East Jaintia Hills 11 (six ILIs, two high-risk, one screening, one health worker, one returnee), North Garo Hills four (all high-risk), East Garo Hills two (one armed forces/paramilitaries, one screening), South West Khasi Hills one (high-risk).

      There were also 152 recoveries – 109 in East Khasi Hills, 18 in East Jaintia Hills, 15 in West Garo Hills, eight in Ri-Bhoi, one in West Jaintia Hills and one in South West Khasi Hills.

      There are now 2,678 active Covid-19 cases in the state. East Khasi Hills alone accounts for 1,583 active cases, Ri-Bhoi 352, West Garo Hills 184, West Jaintia Hills 119, West Khasi Hills 117 and East Jaintia Hills 100.

      In all, Meghalaya has had 19,302 Covid-19 cases, of which 2,678 are active, 16,414 have recovered and 210 have died from the virus. The recovery rate has fallen to 85.04 percent. The fatality rate is 1.09 percent. More than 3.39 lakh doses of the Covid-19 vaccines have been administered in the state as of today. The seven-day rolling average for new cases now stands at 313.43, the first time it has crossed the 300 barrier.
