The sudden decision to impose a lockdown in East Khasi Hills with just a few hours’ notice is completely inappropriate, United Democratic Party (UDP) general secretary Jemino Mawthoh said today.
In a crisis situation, political leaders have to act like crisis managers and look at the situation from all angles and from all perspectives, he opined.
“Following the announcement, there is a mad rush everywhere, we see long queues at ATMs, panic buying in shops and market places, construction and daily wage workers being left stranded and, most importantly, it has hit the common people, the poorer sections of the community who are frantic and in a dilemma how to fend for their families in the next five days,” Mawthoh said.
He agreed that with the surge in Covid-19 cases the lockdown is necessary but was of the opinion that ample time needs to be given to the general public to be prepared.
