A prefabricated Covid hospital will be constructed in Tura within the next two months, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma informed today.
“We are going for a prefab structure, which will come to less than half the cost that would have been incurred in the ISBT (Inter-State Bus Terminus) location. Hopefully it should not take more than 60 days,” Sangma informed.
The Chief Minister said that initially the construction of the Covid-19 hospital was finalised in ISBT, Tura but later on, because of the distance and the overall area not being within the reach of the town, there was a change in location.
However, the number of cases then started to decline and it did not look like an investment of Rs 7 crore would be worth it if there was not a long-term plan for the space post-Covid.
Therefore the government decided that it will build a Covid hospital that can later be converted for some other purpose.
Meanwhile, for Shillong, in the event of a surge in cases, the TB Hospital at Umsawli, on the old IIM campus, has allocated around 200 rooms that are being prepared. Corona care centres where beds and oxygen supply can be put up to take care of patients are also being set up.
