Engineers working for the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Ltd (MeECL) have written to Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma to condemn a report in a local English language daily that appeared to accuse engineers of rank communalism.
The letter, signed by the MeECL Engineers’ Association (MEA) general secretary, MF Mawlieh, said that the report on April 17 claimed that many unions and associations opposed the posting of a Khasi officer in Garo Hills.
“Such an irresponsible statement … is unfounded and uncalled for and indicative of mala fide intentions to brew and add communal colour to the issue and bring disrepute to the cordial relations among the members of the MEA,” Mawlieh said. “The members of the Association strongly and unequivocally condemn the disturbing statement and assure the people of the state that the MeECL engineers have been serving the people to the best of their abilities irrespective of the place of posting and will continue to do so in the future. It is worth mentioning that many brother engineers are currently posted and serving the people in the far-flung districts of Garo Hills and similarly our Garo engineers are also doing the same in different districts of Khasi and Jaiñtia Hills with utmost zeal and commitment.”
