Despite claims by the MDA government that it was able to tide over the power crisis in the State by clearing the pending dues of various power generating companies, Meghalaya is set for another round of power cut from today.
It may be noted that this will be the fourth round of load shedding imposed by Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) since February this year for one reason or another.
This time Power Minister James Sangma blamed the shutdown of Palatana power station in Tripura and delayed monsoon in Meghalaya for the fresh round of load shedding.
“It is unfortunate that due to the shortage of power caused by the maintenance shutdown of one unit of the OTPC Palatana Power Station and delayed monsoons in Meghalaya resulting in a shortfall of 2-2.5 Million Units per day, we are having to resort to load shedding commencing from midnight tonight,” Sangma said.
He also said that in view of the present board examinations in the State, the MeECL has tried to minimise the inconvenience caused to students by limiting the load shedding to three hours daily.
As per the load shedding schedule issued by MeECL, the entire Ri-Bhoi and Garo Hills region will not get electricity from 12 midnight to 3 am every day.
The entire Khasi Hills region including Shillong city will not have power from 3 am to 6 am daily.
Further, the load shedding will be resorted for Lumshnong industries and the entire Jaiñtia Hills from 6 am to 9 am, Lumshnong industries from 9 am to 2 pm, Lumshnong industries and Byrnihat industries from 2 pm to 4 pm and Byrnihat industries from 4 pm to 12 pm.
