Shillong, Apr 19: Meghalaya bore the brunt of three new Covid-related fatalities and 192 new infections today, the Health Department informed.
Nihar A Adhikari (83), of Forest Colony in Shillong, was admitted to Shillong Civil Hospital and tested positive for Covid-19 on April 18. He died yesterday evening. Cause of death was Covid pneumonia with hypertension, ischaemic heart disease and stroke.
Harish Kumar Kushwaha (50), of Rilbong in Shillong, was admitted to Nazareth Hospital and tested positive for Covid-19 yesterday and died the same day. Cause of death was Type 2 diabetes with hyperglycaemia, diabetic ketoacidosis, lower respiratory tract infection and a history of cerebral infarct with Covid-19.
Jadabelbra Bhattacharjee (55), of Laban in Shillong, was admitted to Shillong Civil Hospital and tested positive for Covid-19 on April 3. He died today morning. Cause of death was Covid pneumonia with Type 2 diabetes and hypertension.
Eighty-one of the new cases in the state were among returnees.
East Khasi Hills accounted for 148 of the new infections – 69 returnees, 22 high-risk contacts, 23 armed forces/paramilitaries, six influenza-like illnesses (ILIs), nine detected through screening, four health workers, one severe acute respiratory infection, two in Mawlai, one in Jhalupara, one in Mawbah, one in Laitumkhrah, two in Nongmynsong, one in Nongthymmai and six in Khyndailad. Ri-Bhoi saw 30 new cases – four returnees, 10 high-risk contacts, 10 through screening, two armed forces/paramilitaries and four health workers.
West Garo Hills reported another four new cases (two high-risk, two returnees), East Jaiñtia Hills four (two ILIs, two returnees), West Jaiñtia Hills three (two through screening, one returnee) and West Khasi Hills three (all returnees).
There were also 25 recoveries – 17 in East Khasi Hills, six in West Jaiñtia Hills and one each in East Jaiñtia Hills and Ri-Bhoi.
There are now 1,021 active Covid-19 cases in the state. East Khasi Hills alone accounts for 746 active cases and West Jaiñtia Hills 116.
In all, Meghalaya has had 15,308 Covid-19 cases, of which 1,021 are active, 14,130 have recovered and 157 have died from the virus. The recovery rate has fallen to 92.31 percent. The fatality rate is 1.03 percent. Over 1.88 lakh doses of the Covid-19 vaccine have been administered in Meghalaya as of today.
