The 154th Covid-related fatality in Meghalaya was recorded today in East Khasi Hills, the Health Department informed.
Nandeswar Das (80), of Nongrim Hills, was admitted to Supercare Hospital yesterday after struggling to breathe and died there the same day. He tested positive for Covid-19 and suffered from diabetes as well.
Cases in the state increased by a further 108 today, 43 of which were among returnees.
East Khasi Hills accounted for 95 of these cases – 42 returnees, 26 high-risk contacts, two armed forces/paramilitaries, eight in Nongthymmai, six in Sadew, two influenza-like illnesses (ILIs) and nine detected through screening.
West Jaiñtia Hills reported another seven new cases (six high-risk, one returnee), Ri-Bhoi five (all high-risk) and East Jaiñtia Hills one (high-risk).
There were also 33 recoveries – 31 in East Khasi Hills and two in West Jaiñtia Hills.
There are now 754 active Covid-19 cases in the state. East Khasi Hills alone accounts for 533 active cases and West Jaiñtia Hills 114.
In all, Meghalaya has had 14,979 Covid-19 cases, of which 754 are active, 14,071 have recovered and 154 have died from the virus. The recovery rate has fallen to 93.94 per cent. The fatality rate is 1.03 per cent. Over 1.77 lakh doses of the Covid-19 vaccine have been administered in Meghalaya as of today.
