The State BJP will send an objection to Governor, Satya Pal Malik on the formation of the new executive committee in the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council stating that 15 is not a “magic number.”
The NPP won 11 seats and roped in three independents and one GNC MDC to stitch a coalition called the Garo Hills Democratic Coalition (GHDC).
However, newly elected MDC of the BJP, Bernard Marak stated that the Governor was misled as a court verdict specified that the minimum majority for forming an EC is 17.
Marak said that a court had passed an order in 2000 in the case of Edmund Sangma and Winson Sangma, that minimum majority for forming an EC should be 17 MDCs.
“…because one of them will be the Chairman, so once in the 29-member House if one is a chairman it is a tie again, making it 14 members each. So that’s why the court has given a verdict that it should be 17 MDCs. So if they want to form an EC, it should be 17,” he added.
He said that the BJP will be sending an objection since the court order should not be violated.
Marak also said that the party will not partner with the NPP in the GHADC and would stick to its principle of “continued fight against corruption.”
BJP State president Ernest Mawrie said, “Whoever forms the EC, they should come clean and conduct an enquiry into the misutlisation of funds by the previous EC and so many other irregularities.”
Mawrie said that in Assam the government led by the BJP has allowed for a CBI inquiry into the alleged corruption in Karbi Anglong Autonomous District Council, which is also led by the same party. “It is an autonomous body. So if it is so, let there be free investigation,” he added.
