The 152nd Covid-related fatality in Meghalaya was recorded today in East Khasi Hills, the Health Department informed.
Bron Narlong (36), a taxi driver from Umklai Nongpoh in Ri-Bhoi, was diagnosed as having Covid-19 at Nongpoh Civil Hospital yesterday and was referred to Shillong Civil Hospital the same morning. With low oxygen levels and low blood pressure, he was moved into the ICU but died just before midday yesterday. Cause of death was Covid-19, acute respiratory failure and septic shock. He had no known co-morbidities.
Cases continued to surge in the state, with a new 2021 record of 121 cases recorded, 36 of which were returnees.
The number of active cases has surged by 1,153 per cent since March 31, from 49 to 565.
East Khasi Hills accounted for 80 of these cases – 29 returnees, 22 high-risk contacts, six armed forces/paramilitaries, two health workers, three in Lumdiengsoh, one in Mawlai, one in Nongthymmai and one in Polo.
West Jaiñtia Hills reported 26 cases, all of which were among high-risk contacts of infected persons.
There were also five cases each in East Jaiñtia Hills (four returnees) and Ri-Bhoi (three health workers, two police), two each in South West Khasi Hills (both returnees) and West Garo Hills and one in North Garo Hills (returnee).
There were also 12 recoveries, nine in East Khasi Hills and three in Ri-Bhoi.
There are now 565 active Covid-19 cases in the state, an increase of 24 per cent on the previous day. East Khasi Hills alone accounts for 430 active cases and West Jaiñtia Hills 84.
In all, Meghalaya has had 14,703 Covid-19 cases, of which 565 are active, 13,986 have recovered and 152 have died from the virus. The recovery rate has fallen to 95.12 percent. The fatality rate is 1.03 percent. Over 1.71 lakh doses of the Covid-19 vaccine have been administered in Meghalaya as of today.
