The construction of a school in memory of anti-uranium stalwart Spility Lyngdoh Langrin in Domïasiat, West Khasi Hills, is underway but the public has been urged to contribute funds so that the project can be seen to its completion.

Langrin was the face of resistance to uranium mining in Meghalaya. She passed away last year at the age of 95.

The Presbyterian Youth Today – International Network (PYTIN) then decided to construct a school in Domïasiat, according to her wishes. The state government had closed down the lower primary school in the village in the 2000s after a major agitation against uranium mining. The village children then had to travel miles to the next school, putting their parents in difficulty.

PYTIN plans to make the new school an English medium one to make it easier for the children if they pursue further education.

The aim is for this school to be different from conventional schools as the children will be taught about the need to protect the environment and on agriculture, which will help them in becoming self-reliant when they grow up.

Urging the public to extend help in either cash or kind, PYTIN said that those interested in donating can contact – 8837006494 (Bremly Lyngdoh), 8787885205 (Powell Sohkhlet), 7005362464 (Pynshai S Lyngdoh).
