The Non-Gazetted Employees Association (NGEA) of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) has decided to seek postponement of the district council polls.
In a press release issue today, the association said that they would meet Governor Satya Pal Malik to defer the elections until their dues are cleared.
“We understand that holding the election to GHADC is a Constitutional mandate and we are not disputing it. It is a democratic right. At the same time, payment of salary to its employees is also a fundamental right and mandate of the Constitution under article 14. The denial of salary to the employees is also an infringement as the state government failed to release the royalty share of GHADC and clear the due salaries of the employees,” the association said.
The association further stated that given the situation they had no other option than to boycott the election by abstaining from work.
The GHADC elections are slated for April 9 this year with election expenditure likely to be about Rs 15 crores as per the State government’s estimate.
