After a delay because of the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Shillong Civil Hospital’s new cancer wing will become functional in two or three months, oncology specialist Dr Anisha Mawlong informed today.
The cancer unit was meant to be inaugurated last year but was pushed back as the building was turned into a dedicated Covid ward.
“But now we are very lucky and fortunate that Covid-19 cases have come down in our state. Right now we are in the process of planning to move the (Oncology) Department to the cancer wing. So in a span of two-three months it will be shifted,” Dr Mawlong said.
However, she informed that the installation of the machines will take time due to limited funds.
“Due to the time gap, the price of the machines has gone up. We would be able to procure one machine right now and the government is trying to get additional funds to get the latest technology and machines which will be a boon to our patients,” the department in-charge added.
Construction of the wing started in 2011 with a funding of Rs 26 crore from the government of India’s Department of Atomic Energy.
