Despite the growth of the film industry in Meghalaya, local film producer Lansius Syiemlieh complained today that the State government is not doing enough to support the industry.
“Filmmaking has started to become quite popular in our state,” Syiemlieh said while promoting his movie, ‘To Wanphai Shanga’, here today. “It not only generates employment opportunities for many, especially the youth, but also creates opportunities for them to showcase their talent in acting, singing, dancing and, at the same time, promotes tourism but, sadly, the filmmakers do not receive support from the government.”
That support, he added, could include a government-owned cinema hall to promote local films and the provision of subsidies, as is done in other states.
He also said that the viewing public also does not support the industry enough. While there is a persistent demand for the inclusion of the Khasi language in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution, there is little appetite, he said, for Khasi films and songs.
‘To Wanphai Shanga’ will return to cinema screens for one week from January 29.
