The residents of South Garo Hills, along with the Association for Democracy and Empowerment (ADE), have urged the government to hasten the process of restarting coal mining.
Rat-hole coal mining has been banned in the state since 2014 on the orders of the National Green Tribunal.
In a statement to the press, the ADE leaders stated that halting mining has brought tremendous difficulties to the lives of the citizens of the district.
The leaders of the ADE also urged the government to resume coal mining while adhering to the instructions of the Supreme Court, as coal mining done according to the guidelines will restore the lives of the helpless and the destitute in the region, it said.
