The 24th Covid-19 death in the state this month was reported from East Khasi Hills today.
As a result, December fatalities from the disease have overtaken those of November 24 to 23. This was the 109th Covid-related death in the district and 135th in the state.
The deceased was identified as Narmaya Limbu (68), of Happy Valley, Shillong, who was admitted to NEIGRIHMS on December 21 after losing consciousness. She had a history of Type 2 diabetes and hypertension. She was diagnosed with having suffered a stroke with respiratory failure, septic shock and renal dysfunction and also tested positive for Covid-19. After suffering two cardiac arrests she was declared dead yesterday evening. Cause of death was septic shock with multi-organ failure, Covid-19 pneumonia, stroke, diabetes and hypertension.
Meanwhile, there were 29 new cases in Meghalaya and 159 recoveries.
Of the new cases 24 were in East Khasi Hills, three in West Garo Hills and one each in South West Garo Hills and West Khasi Hills.
In East Khasi Hills 10 new infections were in the Nongkseh cluster, while five were detected in Laitumkhrah, two in Umpling and one in Happy Valley. There were also two cases in returnees.
The recoveries were divided between East Khasi Hills (112), West Jaiñtia Hills (40), West Garo Hills (two), Ri-Bhoi, East Jaiñtia Hills, South West Garo Hills, South Garo Hills and West Khasi Hills (one each).
In all, Meghalaya has had 13,328 Covid-19 cases, of which 299 are active, 12,894 have recovered and 135 have died from the virus. The recovery rate has climbed to 96.74 percent. The fatality rate is 1.01 percent.
