Meghalaya’s first woman deputy commissioner Margaret Rose Mawlong and the first tribal Khasi woman to qualify the Assam Civil Service passed away on Wednesday. She was 82.
In 1967, Mawlong cleared the ACS standing second in the merit list and first among the tribal candidates.
From 1968 to 1972, she was the Extra Assistant Commissioner in the Khasi Jaiñtia Hills district.
She also held various positions in the government of Meghalaya Mawlong and was the first lady DC of East Khasi Hills district from 1988 to 1991.
Mawlong was a multi-faceted woman as she was part of various social organizations. She was also conferred with the ‘Friends of Liberation War Heroes’ by the Bangladesh government for her contribution in the refugee camps during the war to liberate Bangladesh.
Mawlong retired in 1996 as Secretary to the Food Supplies and Consumer Affairs.
She will be laid to rest at the Laitumkhrah Catholic Cemetery on Thursday.
