One person died and another is still unconscious due to breathing problems after they entered an abandoned coal mine in West Khasi Hills.
According to police, on December 17, three persons – Rajentu L. Nonglait (24), Rajit L. Nonglait (30) and Shanborstar L. Nonglait of Mawkyllei village went to Pyndengshallang Maweit to survey an abandoned coal quarry.
At around 4 pm, when Rajentu entered the coal mine, the other two reportedly heard him shouting that he is unable to breathe properly.
Following this, Rajit rushed into the quarry to rescue Rajentu. However, when both of them did not come out of the quarry, Shanborstar who was waiting outside the quarry, alerted the villagers and asked for help.
In the incident, Rajit was reported to have died while Rajentu was pulled out under unconscious state and was shifted to Nongstoin Civil Hospital for treatment.
In this connection, police have lodged a suo-moto FIR at Nongstoin police station and investigation is on.
