There is no chance that Congress MLAs from Meghalaya will desert the party for the NPP ahead of the 2023 State elections given the way the NPP has ruined the State in its nearly three years in power, Rambrai-Jyrngam MDC Bajop Pyngrope has told Highland Post.
“People have seen what the NPP has done in these last three years and while Chief Minister Conrad Sangma is busy inaugurating central projects only, with no initiative on state projects at all, the GDP of the State has gone hopelessly down while the unemployment rate has skyrocketed,” Pyngrope said today.
Pyngrope also reacted strongly to allegations by UDP leader Jemino Mawthoh against the Congress. It may be mentioned that Mawthoh had rejected the idea of UDP allying with the Congress that that is accused of corruption.
“If they think they are so clean they should lead the government or pull out of it and not dirty their hands with a party involved in illegalities,” Pyngrope said before adding that there is solid evidence of corruption that will be put in the public domain soon.
He also said that Congress legislators would also be foolhardy to join the BJP because the saffron outfit’s “anti-minority” policies and agenda is unpopular with the public.
Pyngrope also said that the BJP’s push for the contentious Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) at the central level will also hurt its chances in Meghalaya.
On the chances of the BJP in 2023, the MDC recounted the history of the Hindu nationalist party in the state, which has been underwhelming in successive elections, culminating in the win of just two seats in the 60-member Assembly in 2018.
“The scenario in Meghalaya is that we don’t accept the BJP and legislators wanting to contest election from the BJP will have to think a million times because the past figures show that the BJP has no presence in Meghalaya,” he said.
The BJP is a minor figure in the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government, which is led by the NPP. The two are also allies in Parliament.
