Security forces of both Bangladesh (BGB) and India (BSF) today celebrated the victory achieved by both nations against the forces of Pakistan on this day in 1971 at the War Memorial at Killapara, Dalu in West Garo Hills district near the international border.
On this day, in 1971, after months of bloodshed, Bangladesh achieved its independence from Pakistan through the support of India and its security forces, with many security personnel laying down their lives for the dream.
On the eve of this day, BSF and BGB exchanged greetings on BOPs along the International Border in Meghalaya. The Border guarding forces paid a floral tribute at the War Memorial Killapara, to the war heroes who sacrificed their lives during 1971 war.
The War Memorial at BOP Killapara, in West Garo Hills marks the importance of the 1971 war fought on the Eastern front where BOP Killapara was being guarded by the BSF.
It was the valiant action on part of the BSF’s brave jawans that denied the Pakistani troops the strategic control over the Dalu-Tura road.
On the day a special tribute was paid to Late BS Tyagi (Commandant (Retd) BSF), who exhibited exemplary courage while taking on the Pakistan Army during the war with only a handful of men at his disposal when information came in that the East Pakistan Army was fast approaching.
“BSF jawans fought valiantly and repulsed two enemy attacks despite numerical inferiority and facilitated the birth of Bangladesh. They fought till the ‘last men last bullet’ where 9 BSF personnel made supreme sacrifice and laid down their lives on mother land,” said a release by the BSF on the occasion.
On this occasion, Bhagwant Singh, Commandant SHQ BSF Tura, Karunanidhi Tripathi Commandant, 55 Bn BSF, Darbara Singh, Offg Commandant 75 Bn, Pradip Doley Offg Comdt 28 Bn BSF remembered the sacrifices and laid a wreath while paying floral tributes at the War Memorial.
