The Confederation of Meghalaya Social Organisations (COMSO) will organise protests all over the State on December 19, to mark the completion of one year of the adoption of a resolution by the Meghalaya Assembly urging the Government of India to implement Inner Line Permit (ILP) under the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation, 1873.
However, the centre is yet to consider the resolution.
“The COMSO will hold a public protest on December 19 on the first anniversary of the resolution passed by the Meghalaya Assembly to urge the centre to implement ILP in the State,” CoMSO chairman Robertjune Kharjahrin.
Kharjahrin added that the protest will be a mark of protest against the government of India’s non-seriousness to take up the issue.
The COMSO chairman also informed that on the occasion of U Kiang Nangbah’s death anniversary on December 30 evening, the confederation will organise a torch rally.
He said that through this torch rally, the confederation wants to instill a fighting spirit amongst the citizens of the State as shown by the freedom fighter.
It may be mentioned that on December 19, last year members across party lines, including the ruling BJP, supported the ILP resolution.
The one day special session was conducted with the sole intention to pass the resolution to implement ILP in the State, which is a long pending demand of the people of Meghalaya.
The clamour for ILP in Meghalaya grew louder after the Centre introduced ILP in Manipur just days before the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) was adopted by Parliament on December 11, 2019.
