The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) conducted a final inspection before commencing work on a new bridge to replace that at Dwar Ksuid, which has been closed to heavy traffic because of safety concerns.
Cracks in the bridge’s supports has meant that the Shillong bypass is shut to heavy vehicles, forcing interstate trucks and buses to have to ply through the state capital on their way to Jaiñtia Hills or beyond into Assam’s Barak Valley, Mizoram or Tripura.
NHAI has entrusted the new bridge project to the Border Roads Organisation and work is expected to begin in the days to come.
Today NHAI officials were accompanied by those of the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Ltd (MeECL) and village authorities of Umroi Nongrah on the inspection.
They identified a few obstacles that need to be dealt with before work can commence, like electricity poles, the removal of which will be handled by MeECL.
