The opposition Congress Party will move a motion of no-confidence against the Conrad K Sangma-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government during the current autumn session of the Assembly, which is scheduled to conclude on November 12.
Leader of the opposition, Dr Mukul Sangma, said the motion will be taken up tomorrow provided Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh admits the opposition’s notice. The former Chief Minister said this after an emergent Congress Legislature Party meeting today.
The seven-party MDA coalition government has the numbers to defeat the motion, at least on paper. The MDA comprises the National People’s Party (21 MLAs), the United Democratic Party (seven), the People’s Democratic Front (four), the Bharatiya Janata Party (two), the Hill State People’s Democratic Party (two) and the Nationalist Congress Party (one) and Khun Hynñiewtrep National Awakening Movement (one). There are also three independents who support the government for a total strength of 41 in the 60-member house.
The Congress, with its 19 members, will table a motion of no-confidence because, Dr Mukul said, of the failure of the government on all fronts, particularly in its failure in “protecting the interest of the state”.
