Chief Minister Conrad Sangma today said that almost Rs 3000 crore is required for improving the elementary school infrastructure in the State.

He was speaking at a function to lay the foundation of the new college building of Sohra Government College at Saitsohpen, Sohra.

Also present were Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui, Shella MLA Balajied Synrem and Sohra MLA Gavin M. Mylliem.

Informing that the government is making its endeavour to improve the education scenario, Sangma said, “Everything cannot change in an instant but we need to start somewhere. I strongly feel that the government should look at ensuring the right education for the youth”.

“We are not saying that everything will change. But I think we need to start somewhere”, he said, while informing that the State government is working to ensure an overall revamp to create better educational infrastructure in the State.

“Almost Rs 3000 crore is required alone for improving the elementary school infrastructure in the State,” Sangma said.

The Chief Minister lauded the efforts of all those instrumental in bringing the project and said that the new building is a step towards providing better education to the youth.

“As government we have laid focus to channelise the energy of the youth, so that they become productive. We are curating programmes so that we are able to guide and mould the mindset of our youth,” he said.

He further said that the youth will be the focus in formulation of policies and programmes.

“Investment in younger generation through different activities is key pillar to shape the future of the State and the country as a whole”, Sangma said.

“As a government we should look at ensuring that the youth are shaped in the right manner so that they become productive, responsible, patriotic, hardworking and committed citizens,” he added.

Terming that the government has a huge challenge ahead, he said, “We have a vision and we are committed to ensure that the situation needs to be reversed. The journey is not easy but it is not impossible as well. We have a plan and we want to move ahead”.

Sohra Government College, formerly known as Sohra College was provincialised in 2009. The new building is being upgraded with an investment of Rs 12 crore.
