The ‘Clean Sohra Campaign’, on Saturday cleared hundreds of liquor, beer bottles, cans as well as wafer packets left by those who visited the various tourists spot in the area.
This initiative carried out to clear the popular tourist spot of the wastes left by visitors, was conducted by the Khasi Students’ Union, Sohra Circle, Hynñiewtrep Youth Council, Sohra Circle, Green Tech Foundation and Matti Society led by Alan West.
It may be mentioned that most of the time the tourists visiting the State are blamed for polluting the whole stretch of the road leading to Sohra from Shillong. However, what was seen today was that the whole stretch was strewn with junk probably by local tourists, since there was a lockdown for months due to the Covid-19 pandemic and tourist spots are now open to local tourists only.
The ‘Clean Sohra Campaign’ in the first phase on Saturday, started their drive from Umtyngar village till Sohra.
Pamphlets were also distributed to drivers urging them not to haphazardly throw wastes along the stretch, even as waste bags were handed out to them.
Alan West informed that the Clean Sohra Campaign will continue with its endeavour to clean the whole stretch leading to Sohra even as he said that the local authorities will be urged to put notices in the tourists spots and other places prohibiting throwing of wastes.
