The Garo Student’s Union of Karukol under South Garo Hills (SGH) along with Nokmas and residents of the same region have expressed their anger and resentment after the contractor of a PMGSY road reused abutments meant for a timber bridge while it is being converted into an RCC one.
The road in question is the upcoming PMGSY road between Karukol to Tolegre in the district.
In a complaint submitted to the executive engineer of PWD, SGH, the NGO expressed surprise and anger after discovering that abutments that were already there for a timber bridge that ran through the road, were once again being used to construct an RCC one.
“As per our knowledge the foundation using the same abutments of the earlier timber bridge is not sufficient and dangerous. The abutments per se may not be in the original estimates but are still being constructed by the contractor. As a community, we are worried and seek an investigation into the matter,” said president of Karukol GSU unit, AZ Matrsram N Marak.
The NGO has now asked the PWD department to re-estimate all such RCC bridges on the same road on an urgent basis.
