Two women of Nongdisong village, related to the octogenarian who was buried alive on suspicion of ‘practicing witchcraft’, were arrested by West Khasi Hills police today.
Sildaris Marngar (21) and Ephrilda Marngar (54) were arrested for being part of the crime committed on October 7, last.
Police have so far arrested 23 persons, including the two women, all of whom are from the Marngar clan and relatives of 80-year old Moris Marngar.
Moris, who was forcibly taken from his residence at Mawliehbah Mawnar, about 3 kms from Nongdisong on October 6 was buried alive after he was confined to the house of Sildaris, his niece whom the relatives believed that Moris had cast a spell on her.
Meanwhile, a protest rally was today organised at Mawliehbah Mawnar which was attended by residents of adjacent villages against the murder of Moris.
The rally organised by the dorbar of 12 villages under Mawliehbah area was also aimed at creating awareness for people not to believe in superstition.
Speakers at the rally condemned the murder and said such crimes infused by superstition cannot be accepted in a civilised society.
Sordar of Mawliehbah Hanly Nongsiang, secretary of Nongjyndiang K. Wanniang, member of the executive dorbar of Mawlangdep K. Lyngdoh, secretary of Mawliehbah Mawnar B.S. Roy Nongphud, FKJGP Nongdisong Mawiawa area unit president Annand Peiñlang, and KSU Mawliehbah area unit president G Nongsiej spoke at the rally.
