A joint border meeting was held today in Jowai at the level of Deputy Commissioner between West Jaiñtia Hills and Assam’s West Karbi Anglong to discuss matters arising from the disputed border between the two districts.
The West Jaiñtia Hills side was represented by the DC, LSN Dykes, Superintendent of Police B Marak, Additional DC L Kynjing, border magistrates B Blah and B Langbang and other officials.
In the afternoon the meeting was also attended by Jaiñtia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) Chief Executive Member Thombor Shiwat and other executive members.
After the meeting, Dykes said that both DCs discussed ongoing development work in the area along the border and said that the dispute between the two states should not interfere with the work, in keeping with the resolution to maintain the status quo by both states, in the interest of the public.
It was also decided that there should be community-level meetings between villages from both sides of the border and that the DCs will initiate this process.
Dykes also informed that it was decided that the DCs will start promoting trade and commerce in the area, especially of local products as this will help strengthen the bonds between residents on both sides.
