The dorbar shnong Mawjai village has demanded the State government to pay compensation to the families of the victims who were swept away by the Tihiang River.

In a gratitude statement issued by Mawjai village secretary Zandy Myrthong today after the last two bodies were recovered the village has also condemned the Border Area Development officer and the contractors for not repairing the bridge over the river despite several pleas.

Six people from Mawjai village lost their lives when they were swept away by the Tihiang River, under Warsan Lyngdoh area on Tuesday. The tragic incident was brought about when the jeep they were travelling in had to drive across through the river as part of the bridge was recently washed away.

It took three days for the combine search and rescue teams of the State Disaster Rescue Force (SDRF), Fire and Emergency Services and locals from various villages under the Warsan Lyngdoh area to fish out the bodies despite incessant rain and the rising waters of the river.

The victims are identified as Ferdinand Myrthong, Ladianghun L Mawlot and her teenage daughters Balamanbha L Mawlot and Lapynshai L Mawlong, a mother Ibashisha Lyngdoh and her one year old baby Daman Lyngdoh.

Two others who swam to safety after the mishap were Marshal Myrthong and Dapborlin Lyngdoh.

The village dorbar in the statement also urged the people’s representatives to push for laying of a 9 km road from Nongrynniang to Nongtnger village.
