The State government has set up an expert committee in order to avoid unnecessary delay in the processing of bills sent by the Autonomous District Councils to the Governor for his assent.
The committee headed by the Additional Chief Secretary also comprised of officials from the State government, officials from the three Autonomous District Councils, and Macmillan Byrsat, Chairman of Meghalaya State Law Commission as special invitee.
As per the terms of reference, the committee shall coordinate the processing of bills sent by Autonomous District Councils to the Governor for his assent.
Before processing any other bill currently lying with the State government for disposal, the committee shall complete the process of examination of the KHADC (Regulation and Administration of Land) Bill 2020.
Recently, KHADC chairman Pyniaid Sing Syiem had said that from 1952 till date, 61 bills were passed by the council and 11 have not received the assent of the Governor.
He also informed that there are 18 bills that were submitted to the Governor through the District Council Affairs Department but were returned by the Governor with a message.
Syiem also said that there are 40 bills that the District Council Affairs Department has asked for clarification from the KHADC.
