Khliehriat, Jul 3: The dilapidated nature of the Rymbai-Sonapur road in East Jaintia Hills has reached such an extent that even relief efforts to help residents of the area tide over the present situation on account of Covid-19 have been severely hampered.
This came to the fore today when members of the Southern Border Youth Welfare Association (SBYWA) were left with no option but to use boats on the Kuliang river to transport relief materials to Huroi village.
“We already know about the situation and therefore we arranged beforehand for a vehicle to receive the relief material on the other bank of the river when we arrived there,” SBYWA president, Skhembor Shadap said today.
It may be noted here that Huroi village under East Jaintia Hills district lies close to the international border with Bangladesh and is connected to the rest of Meghalaya by the Rymbai-Bataw-Borghat-Sonapur road which is in a state of gross disrepair.
Upon arrival at Huroi village, members of the SBYWA organised a small gathering where Shadap said, “We know that you are all under great hardship because you are neglected by the government. Road communication is in shambles, you lack medical facilities, proper mobile network, electricity and other developmental work but the SBYWA will not abandon you and will help you in whichever little way it can.”
