Shillong, Jul 1: The salary of State government employees which was deferred for April will be released back to them along with the salary for the month of June.
This was informed by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Twitter today. Sangma is still under home quarantine after his recent return from New Delhi and Imphal.
Earlier, the State government had decided that the salary of government employees for April and May would be deferred.
However, the government later announced that there would be no deferment of salary for May after the central shares were released to the State by the Government of India for April and May.
In April, the State government decided to defer the payment of a part of the salaries of cabinet ministers, bureaucrats and its employees for two months – April and May.
According to the government, the salary deferment was a precautionary step for effective management of the state finances in view of the unprecedented situation arising due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the uncertainty in the devolution of central taxes and the State’s own revenue collection.
Earlier, the budgetary estimate for monthly tax devolution to Meghalaya was Rs 428 crore, but the Centre released only Rs 352 crore in April.
The State’s revenue collection has drastically dropped due to the Covid-19 situation but it has slowly improved in May and June in view of the relaxation given to some economic activities including sale of alcohol.
