Nongpoh, Nov 6: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Friday visited villages across Mawhati constituency to inaugurate several roads built under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY)-III, aimed at improving rural connectivity and accelerating development in the region.

The roads inaugurated included the 20.50-km Mawlasnai-Kdohhati road, described as the longest PMGSY road in the state, the 8-km Mawlaho-Pamlatar road, and the 16.125-km Umlaper-Lymphuid road.

Apart from inaugurating the roads, the Chief Minister also unveiled the monolith and statue of Jesus Christ at Mawlasnai village.

Speaking on the occasion, Sangma said his visit was aimed at personally understanding the ground realities, listening to the concerns of residents and witnessing the challenges faced by the people. He emphasised the government’s commitment to taking development to even the most remote villages of the state.

He described the visit as a historic occasion, stating that it was the first time a Chief Minister of Meghalaya had visited the Mawhati region and reached some of its remotest villages.

The Chief Minister also assured the public that blacktopping work on the remaining stretch of the road from Sonidan to Jagiroad would begin in December or January, improving transportation and connectivity for residents. He emphasised that road infrastructure remains a crucial foundation for economic growth and overall development.

Mawhati MLA Charles Marngar, Ri Bhoi Deputy Commissioner Dr. Abhishek Saini, Superintendent of Police Giri Prasad, officials from various government departments, village leaders, elders and school students were present.
