Shillong, Nov 5: The Niksamso Garo Community Organization (NGCO) has raised serious concern over the non-completion of nine eco-tourism projects across East Garo Hills even a decade after Rs 13.61 crore was reportedly withdrawn by contractors.
In a press release, the NGCO said the projects remain incomplete despite the passage of over 10 years, raising questions over implementation, monitoring and accountability of the Meghalaya Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC).
“What action has MTDC taken against the contractors? Why has it failed to ensure timely completion? Who will take responsibility for the delay and alleged misuse of public funds?” the organisation asked.
The projects were intended to promote tourism, generate employment for local youth and strengthen the rural economy, NGCO said.
The organisation demanded an immediate independent inquiry into all projects, a detailed report on sanctioned amount, funds released and payments made, disclosure of contractors’ names and work orders, physical verification of sites, action against those responsible for negligence or irregularities, and completion within a defined timeframe.
“Public funds are not personal property. Every rupee must be accounted for,” NGCO president Tengrak R. Marak said.
It urged the state government, Tourism Department and MTDC to provide a public explanation without delay.
