Shillong, Oct 25: The Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) paid tribute to Capt Williamson A Sangma, Meghalaya’s first Chief Minister and the GHADC’s first Chief Executive Member, on his 36th death anniversary.
The ceremony was held at the GHADC office premises in Tura. It began with a Rashtriya Salute by personnel of the 2nd MLP Battalion, Goeragre, followed by floral tributes at his statue at William Point and a minute’s silence.
Cabinet minister Marcuise N Marak recalled Sangma’s role in the creation of Meghalaya. He said as leader of the All Party Hill Leaders Conference (APHLC), Sangma spearheaded the movement for a separate hill state and later worked to strengthen autonomous district councils to safeguard tribal identity and rights.
GHADC CEM Dhormonath Ch Sangma also highlighted his contribution to building the Sixth Schedule system.
Later, dignitaries visited his resting place at his residence and laid floral tributes.
Meanwhile, the day was also observed at Capt Williamson Memorial Park in Baghmara.
The programme was jointly organised by the South Garo Hills district administration and the Ampang Mangsang Mahari.
Additional Deputy Commissioner PR Sangma recalled Capt Sangma’s role as a pioneer of Meghalaya statehood. He urged the gathering to uphold his legacy of integrity and public service in daily life, not just on his death anniversary.
Floral wreaths were laid at the statue of the late leader, followed by a cultural programme and a slow march parade by the Baghmara District Police.
