Nongpoh, Sep 28: An unidentified man, believed to be a rag picker aged around 55-60 years, was found dead at the NES Bharat Petrol Pump at 12th Mile, Mawsmai in Ri-Bhoi district.
Police said information was received on September 25 at 8.30 am from the petrol pump manager Jaswan Singh that a man was lying unconscious inside the premises.
Enquiry revealed that fuel dispenser Ranjan Kumar had seen the man sleeping near the toilet area at around 2 am. When he went to wake him up at 5.30 am, he was found unconscious and unresponsive.
The man was frequently seen in the area collecting recyclable materials, police said. His identity could not be established and no missing report matching his description has been lodged at Byrnihat Police Station.
The body was shifted to Civil Hospital, Nongpoh for post-mortem and has been preserved at the mortuary.
Police described the deceased as 5 feet 4 inches tall, thin built with dusky complexion, short grey hair and grey moustache and beard. He was wearing a light blue T-shirt and a checked lungi at the time of recovery.
