Shillong, Sep 26: A newly constructed 10-bed Urban Primary Health Centre (UPHC) at Lumparing was inaugurated on Saturday to improve healthcare access for Greater Lumparing residents.
The RCC+3 facility was built under the State’s SPA Scheme 2023-24 at a cost of Rs 4.13 crore by the Health Engineering Wing.
The inauguration was attended by South Shillong MLA and Cabinet Minister Sanbor Shullai, Director of Health Services (MI) Dr Neela E Kharsohnon and representatives of Upper Lumparing, Lower Lumparing and Riat Laban-Kynjat Phutbol Dorbar Shnongs.
Shullai said the project was initiated in 2021 and required land, which was provided free of cost — about 5,500 sq ft — by the Lumparing Social and Cultural Club.
The facility, described as a “mini-hospital” with 10 beds and child and maternity units, will benefit daily wage workers, domestic workers and tenants who earlier had to travel 7-8 km to Ganesh Das, NEIGRIHMS or Civil Hospital.
“This will be a great help for them. People can reach the centre within five to 10 minutes,” Shullai said.
The project marks the transition of Lumparing UPHC from a rented house since 2009 to a permanent government facility.
On staffing, Shullai said a proposal for 12-13 posts including specialists, medical officers, staff nurses and ANMs has been moved for government sanction. First preference for jobs will be given to locals through recommendation of the three Dorbar Shnongs.
