Shillong, Sep 24: Tura town could be on its way to becoming rabies-free, after a field survey found that the town has no feral or stray dogs.
The Tura Municipal Board said a joint field survey with the District Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department found that all free-roaming dogs in Tura Municipal area have identifiable caretakers, community guardians or household owners.
Calling it a sign of responsible ownership, TMB said the finding gives Tura a unique chance to eliminate the rabies threat.
As part of this effort, TMB will observe World Rabies Day 2026 on September 28 under the global theme ‘Stronger Together’ — a ‘One Health’ approach linking human, animal and environmental health.
A rabies vaccination drive will be held on September 28 from 8am to 2pm at the State Veterinary Dispensary, Brahminpara, Tura in collaboration with the District Veterinary Department.
The TMB has appealed to all pet owners in Tura and adjoining areas to bring dogs and cats above 3 months old for a free anti-rabies vaccination.
