Through the columns of your esteemed newspaper, I would like to reflect on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 75th birthday, which was observed on September 17.
The occasion provided an opportunity to look back at his long public career and his years as Prime Minister of India. Since assuming office in 2014, Mr. Modi has been associated with several major government initiatives covering areas such as infrastructure, digital services, financial inclusion, sanitation, welfare delivery and economic development.
His birthday was marked by programmes and public activities in different parts of the country. Such occasions also offer citizens an opportunity to discuss the country’s achievements and the challenges that remain, including employment, education, healthcare, economic opportunity and social harmony.
A public leader’s birthday is more meaningful when it becomes an occasion for citizens to reflect on public service and the responsibilities of leadership. It is equally important that democratic discussion remains respectful and that the government’s policies and performance continue to be examined constructively.
I hope the occasion will inspire greater public participation in nation-building and encourage citizens to contribute towards a stronger, more inclusive and prosperous India.
