Shillong, Sep 18: The sessions court has granted 14-day interim bail to KSU general secretary Reuben Najiar following the demise of his father.
Najiar, who is in judicial custody in connection with cases arising out of violence during the KSU’s bike rally on August 19, was granted bail on September 17. He has been directed to surrender on October 1.
Najiar was arrested along with KSU president Raymond Kharjana and vice president Pynkmenlang Sanmiet after the bike rally. Police registered cases following incidents of stone pelting, assault and damage to property during the rally.
The rally had been permitted by the East Khasi Hills district administration.
As investigation progressed, the arrested leaders were produced before court multiple times with additional sections added to cases registered at Sadar, Mawlai and Rynjah police stations.
Three more KSU leaders — Jeremiah Pohthmi, Samuel Kharbani and Banjop Dkhar — were later arrested, taking the total number of arrested KSU leaders to six.
The latest arrest was that of the KSU Shillong East Circle president by the SIT near NEIGRIHMS on September 11. He was produced before court the next day.
The interim bail to Najiar is to allow him to return home for his father’s last rites, even as investigation into the August 19 incidents continues.
