Shillong, Sep 13: Ex-servicemen and families of deceased soldiers in Ri-Bhoi are moving to get their organisation formally recognised to ensure better access to welfare schemes.
The decision was taken at the annual general meeting of the Ri-Bhoi unit of the 7-Trep Meghalaya Ex-Servicemen League, which was held on Saturday in Lumdaitkhla village in Bhoirymbong.
The meeting brought together ex-servicemen and families of deceased personnel from across the district. It was led by unit president Shngainlang Thangkhiew and secretary Niren Pambah.
The main agenda was strengthening unity and ensuring that members are aware of welfare benefits available through the central and state governments. Members also discussed ways to extend more support to families of deceased personnel.
Speaking after the meeting, Thangkhiew said the league has resolved to register itself with the district administration. He said formal recognition will help the organisation function more effectively and make it easier to secure entitlements for ex-servicemen and their families.
The organisation also decided to submit representations to educational institutions and the district administration seeking special provisions for children of ex-servicemen.
A public awareness session on welfare schemes for ex-servicemen and families of deceased personnel was also held during the meeting. The session was conducted by Daswell Marbaniang, welfare organiser of the Zila Sainik Welfare, Shillong.
