Shillong, Sep 11: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Friday launched the Maternal & Child Care Kit initiative under Mission 1000 Days at Rongara in South Garo Hills.
The initiative is part of the government’s commitment to ensure holistic development of children from conception through the first three years of life.
Under it, kits will be given to all mothers delivering at public health institutions in the state. Each kit contains a bag for mother, clothing for newborn, blanket and baby-care products, along with a letter from the Chief Minister highlighting importance of early childhood development.
Speaking on occasion, Sangma said investment in children during earliest years is investment in the future of Meghalaya. Mission 1000 Days adopts a life-cycle approach focusing on physical, cognitive, emotional and social development from conception to three years.
The initiative is expected to benefit around 70,000 pregnant mothers and children across the state in a calendar year.
“The kit is not merely a package of essential items, but a message that every mother deserves care and every child deserves the best possible start in life,” the Chief Minister said.
