Shillong, Sep 11: The East Khasi Hills District Magistrate has prohibited use of loudspeakers, amplifiers, bluetooth speakers and sound producing instruments by roadside singers and street music performers in commercial market areas without prior permission.
In an order issued under Rules 5, 7 and 8 of the Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) Rules, 2000, District Magistrate Abhilash Baranwal said it has been brought to notice that many performers use sound systems exceeding permissible noise limits, thereby violating National Green Tribunal order and Noise Pollution Rules.
The order states that use of sound producing instruments, amplifiers and loudspeakers in public places requires prior written permission from the authority and no such instruments shall be used at night between 10 pm and 6 am except in closed premises.
Non-compliance will be viewed seriously and action will be taken against violators under Section 223 BNS, in addition to action by the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board under Section 15 of Environment (Protection) Act, 1986.
